Tributes to east London teacher Moyra Whelan killed in horror crash on way to friend’s wedding in Cotswolds

Tributes have been paid to a “fun-loving” history teacher who was killed in a four-car smash on the way to a wedding of an old school friend in the Cotswolds.

Moyra Whelan, 35, was killed alongside another man in the horror collision that injured ten others near Aldsworth on Friday December 2.

The horror crash involving a grey Mini Cooper, black Audi A3, grey Polestar 2 and a black Seat Leon, happened shortly after 12.45pm.

The head of history at Woodbridge High School in Woodford, east London died overnight in a Bristol hospital.

Moyra’s family said: “We are all mourning the passing of our beloved daughter and sister. She was the second youngest of seven siblings and lived in East London.

“Moyra loved her job and the children loved her back.

“She was an inspirational teacher, a straight talking, fun loving friend to many and the sunshine of our family.

“She enjoyed life to the full and was on her way to a wedding of one of her school friends when tragedy struck.”

Steven Hogan, Headteacher of Woodbridge High School, added: “This is the most terrible and tragic loss to our school.

“Ms Whelan was an amazing history teacher and head of department. Her classroom was a superb place to be, buzzing with energy.

“So many students have benefited from her wisdom, knowledge and expertise.”

A man, in his 50s, from nearby Cirencester was also pronounced dead at the scene of the horror crash.

Ten other people were also taken to hospital for treatment some with serious injuries.

A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: “Officers are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision and would like to hear from anyone who hasn’t already been spoken to and who have may have witnessed the collision or the vehicles involved prior to the incident.

“Anyone who has dashcam or CCTV footage which they believe would be relevant is also asked to make contact.”
