Tributes pour in for Sligo attack victim and Liverpool FC fanatic Russell Forde

A man who died after a daytime attack in Sligo has been named locally as Russell Forde.

The 39-year-old, from Yeats Drive, Cranmore, was found with head injuries at Rockwood Parade shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services treated Mr Forde at the scene of the incident before rushing him to Sligo University Hospital. A short time later, he was transferred to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin for treatment, where he later died.

Gino O'Boyle, a People Before Profit Councillor in the Sligo-Strandhill area, who knew Russell, said he was "well liked" around the town and was a big Liverpool FC supporter.

"Russell was a very nice character, well liked around the town," he told the Irish Mirror.

"He comes from a very good family and his death is obviously their loss but it's going to be Sligo's loss as well in the wider community. He was an avid Liverpool fan as well."

Tributes have poured in on social media for the victim as well, with a friend revealing that they were "in shock" at the news of his death.

One person wrote: "It's a sad day... we also lost another friend this morning... rip Russell Forde you are already missed buddy... we are all in shock"

Another commented: "R.i.p our friend you will be deeply missed still cant believe you're gone."

Gardaí say that a post-mortem examination is due to take place, the results of which will guide their investigation. No arrests have been made yet and gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí in Sligo are continuing to appeal for witnesses in relation to a serious assault that occurred at Rockwood Parade, Sligo on Tuesday evening 19th April, 2022.

"The man (late 30s) taken from the scene to be treated for an apparent head injury has since passed away at Beaumont Hospital. A post mortem will be conducted and the results of which will direct the further course of the investigation.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Any persons who were in the vicinity on Tuesday evening from 5pm to 6.15pm and also any persons who may have camera footage or dash cam footage from the location at the time of the incident to make it available to them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Sligo Garda Station (071) 915 7000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station. Investigations are ongoing."
