Tributes pour in for 'true gentleman' as young man killed in tragic Cavan crash named

A young man who tragically died following a road collision in the middle of the night Co Cavan is being remembered as "a true gentleman".

Richard Merriman, 36, from Ankerland, Castlepollard, in Westmeath, and who was living in Knocktemple in Cavan, was killed in the single-vehicle crash on Saturday, April 9.

The incident happened on the L3022 at Virginia in Cavan and emergency services arrived at the scene at around 3.45am.

Richard was the sole occupant of the car and was pronounced dead at the scene.

His death notice on rip.ie reads: "Richard Merriman of Ankerland, Fore, Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath residing in Knocktemple, Munterconnaught, Co. Cavan tragical passed on April 9th 2022 aged 36.

Sadly missed by his Fiancée Jane Keogh, his parents Michael and Maria, brother Robert, sisters Lisa and Roseanna, the Keogh family, nephew, nieces, cousins, uncles, aunts, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends."

Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

Tributes have been pouring in online for man who has been described as a "wonderful, kind person" and a "true gentleman".

One person said: "Richie was a true gentleman, hard-working, great crack to work with and to be around. Condolences Jane and the Merriman family. RIP."

A second added: "Jane and family, I was so sorry to hear the news this morning. He was a wonderful kind person and will be such a lost to you all and his friends. Thinking of you thru this extremely difficult time."

Another wrote: "I remember Richard from a few years back, one of the nicest lads ya could meet and have the craic with, all I see is his big smile, deepest sympathies to all his family and close friends during these sad times, may he rest in peace"

A garda spokesperson said: "Forensic Collision Investigators are currently examining the scene and the road is closed with local diversions in place.

"Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

"Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the L3022 at Virginia, County Cavan, between 3:15am and 4am are asked to make this footage available to Gardaí.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bailieboro Garda Station on 042 9694570, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
