Tributes pour in for former councillor Peter Convery who sadly passed away

Tributes have been paid to a ‘much loved’ former Ayrshire councillor who has sadly passed away.

Peter Convery, 76, has been described as the ‘loveliest and sweetest’ by a community he served for over 20 years.

The Troon councillor had only just retired last year after he opted not to stand in the 2022 council elections.

Politicians and councillors have lined up to pay tribute to the former Conservative councillor.

Current Troon councillor, Philip Saxton, says no one will ever be able to fill Peter’s boots as a local councillor in the Troon ward.

The Labour councillor said: “I worked with Peter in the administration, in opposition and although we had our political differences we worked together for the benefit of the people of Troon.

“Peter could be very determined with his ideas and visions and I will say he did normally get what he wanted.

“It might have taken some time but eventually it would happen, he was strong-minded and would always try his best to sort out problems for individuals from all walks of life and that is all you can ask.

“I was sorry to hear he was not standing again in 2022 but his family came first especially after giving 20 years of service.

“Peter was a very well-known person in and around Troon, and he was very family orientated. No one will fill Peter’s boots as a local councillor.”

Ayr, Prestwick and Troon MSP also paid a touching tribute to Peter.

Ms Brown said: “It was extremely sad news to hear of Peters passing and my condolences to his family.

“When I was first elected in 2017 Peter went out of his way to make me feel welcome - despite our political differences.

“He was a man who was able to put politics aside and work for the good of the community.

“Peter was deeply passionate about serving the people of Troon and I know many will share my sadness. I send my heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family and friends.”

Community council leader Frances Carson said: “Peter was the loveliest and sweetest man.

“We used to have the most in-depth conversations. He had a great sense of humour and he was very clever, very sharp and on the ball with everything.

“Anything he could do to help people he’d just do it.

“He’ll be sorely missed.”

Iain Campbell Provost of South Ayrshire added: “I was very sad to hear about the passing of Peter Convery. He was a councillor for over 20 years and did so much for communities in and around Troon.

"He chaired many panels in his time as a councillor including regulatory planning and licensing panel. He had a great eye for detail and went out of his way to learn as much as he could about local and national issues.

"He had a mischievous side and was always ready with a joke to lift your mood. He will be sorely missed not only by me but by other councillors and officers.”
