Tributes paid to 'polite' man, 21, who drowned at Crosby beach

Tributes have poured in for an "amazing" young man who died while swimming at the beach.

Hamza Mansoor was at Crosby beach for a day out with friends when he was swept out to sea on July 20, 2021. The 21-year-old Pakistan-born man died as he struggled to stay afloat as the tide turned.

The Staffordshire University student, who was living in Stoke at the time, was unable to swim and at an inquest at Bootle Town Hall yesterday, it was determined he suffered a cardiac arrest. Hamza and his friend Toqeer Ashraf, who was in a critical condition, were rushed to Aintree Hospital, before the 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the 8.20pm.

Since the article was published social media has been inundated with messages in tribute to Hamza. One woman said: "So sad God bless you and your parents and family so young so heartbreaking". Another said: "Oh that is heart-breaking 21 years old, it's too tragic and upsetting. His poor family, especially his mum, must be devastated. Rest in peace young man."

One commented: "There are to many currents in the Mersey that people don’t realise the dangers once you are in trouble you have had it. So sad another young life gone". Another said: "My sister had been talking to these lovely polite boys just as they set out for the beach. Heartbreaking".

His friend Usman Aslan, the only one of Hamza's friends who could swim, did try to save his life but they became separated in the water. Usman decided to swim to shore to get help as a nearby woman pulled the three struggling friends onto her paddle board.

People on the beach then swam out to help and Hamza but their efforts to save his life were unsuccessful. There has been an outpouring of support for Usman and his efforts to save his friend. Caz Lucas said: "That poor young man trying so hard to save his friends. Imagine looking and seeing all your friends in distress and you having to try and save them. Mind-blowing."

Another said: "Rip to the young man. That tide in the river Mersey is treacherous. Such a shock for his mates with him as well".
