A sailor who died in the tugboat tragedy on the Clyde has been described as a "lovely, kind" man who cared for his mum before she passed away. Ian Catterson, 73, from Millport, was on the boat with shipmate George Taft when it capsized while assisting a cruise ship off Custom House Quay, just off the coast of Greenock, at around 3.30pm on Friday, February 24.
A massive search and rescue operation was launched with Police Scotland and HM Coastguard spending over four hours staging a rescue operation before standing down at 8pm, as night fell. The bodies of Mr Catterson and Mr Taft were discovered by police divers at around 1.40pm on Saturday.
Mr Catterson was a well-known figure in Millport and the community has been left devastated by the heartbreaking news as tributes flooded in. The sailor looked after his mum, Nancy, before she passed away and locals said the pair were "now together again".
Emma Newton said: "It was so sad to hear the confirmation of the rumours that Ian Catterson was one of those lost in the tugboat tragedy. He was a very quiet man who was incredibly kind to my mum when she was his mum Nancy’s carer. Rest in peace."
Margaret Templeman replied: “When I cared for Nancy he was kind, thoughtful and appreciative. So sad to hear the news.” Elizabeth Carey said: “A lovely man who was so good with his mum until she passed. Now together again RIP.”
Isobel Wright said: “So very very sad I’ve know Ian for over thirty years, lovely man. I waved to him every day when out with the dogs. RIP my darling.” Pamela Fleming added: “He was a good neighbour to us and very kind. Horrible news.”
Susan Hunter said: “It was definitely a shock when I heard. I already miss him waving when out for walkies - and the Chapel will miss him greatly too. God bless him and condolences to his family and close friends. What a way to go so suddenly. Such a tragedy.”
Police Scotland along with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service, is investigating the circumstances of the incident. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch is carrying out its own enquiries. The boat that overturned was the Biter, operated by Clyde Marine Services.
Chief Inspector Damian Kane, Greenock Area Commander, said: “Our thoughts are with George and Ian’s families and friends and I’d request their privacy at this difficult time. As our enquiries continue there will be an increased police presence in the area. I thank the local community for their support and understanding.”
In a statement published on its website, Clyde Marine Services said: "Clyde Marine Services Ltd is deeply saddened by the loss of two crew members following an incident on Friday, February 24, 2023. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the two men at this most difficult of times.
"The company is fully co-operating with the official investigations which are ongoing. Accordingly, it would be inappropriate to comment further."
