Tributes paid to jockey Marina Morel as 30 year-old dies after tragic riding accident

An apprentice jockey has tragically died aged 30 from injuries suffered in a fall.

Marina Morel passed away several days after she came off her horse in the incident in Australia.

The young rider was seriously injured when she fell during trackwork at Gulgong.

Marina was airlifted to Westmead Hospital in Sydney and her mother travelled from the family's native France to be at her bedside.

On Saturday, the heartbreaking decision was made to turn her life support machine turned off.

A tweet from the NSW Jockeys’ Association read yesterday: "It is with great sadness, that we share that this morning apprentice jockey Marina Morel has passed following a tragic accident on Tuesday.

"May she rest in peace. Our love and thoughts are with her parents and loved ones."

Marina was involved in the accident just hours after posting on Facebook.

Accompanying it the apprentice rider for leading trainer Brett Thompson wished her dog a happy birthday.

In the collection of photos, the pair can be seen enjoying their time together and Marina is smiling happily at the camera.

Fellow jockey Nash Rawiller, one of dozens paying tribute, said she was a "lovely young girl."

Group 1-winning jockey Robbie Dolan said: "People forget how dangerous this sport is, what terrible news, RIP Marina Morel thoughts with her family and friends."

As a mark of respect, jockeys wore black armbands while competing on Saturday.

Marina raced only ten times after starting out in September with spells working for different trainers.

One of them, Luke Thomas, described his employee as a "beautiful kind soul" on social media.

"Absolutely shattered and broken," he said.

"RIP Marina Morel taken way to soon with so much left to do. It’s a very cruel world we live in."
