Tributes paid to 'inspirational' priest by heartbroken community

A heartbroken Dublin community has paid tribute to an "inspirational" local priest after he passed away.

Fr Louis McDermott passed away on Tuesday. He served as the Parish Priest in St Michael's Church, Inchicore.

The much-loved priest had many friends in Dublin's Darndale and Inchicore as well as Southampton and Liverpool in England.His funeral mass will take place on Saturday morning at 11am in St Michael's Church before the burial in The Community Cemetery, Tyrconnell Road, Dublin 8.

The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate Congregation, of which Fr McDermott was a member, posted the sad news on Facebook. They wrote: "We regret to announce Fr Louis McDermott O.M.I on October 18th, 2022 has sadly gone to his eternal reward.

"Late of Borrinstown, Garristown and former Parish Priest of St. Michael’s Church, Inchicore. Beloved son of the late James and Marcella, pre-deceased by his sister Bernadette and niece Sara."

They added: "Sadly missed by his loving brother James, sister-in-law Dolores, niece Amanda, nephews Nigel, Patrick and Simon, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, his many friends in Liverpool, Darndale, Southampton and Inchicore and his Oblates brothers. May he Rest in Peace."

Heartbroken community members commented on the post, paying tribute to the much-loved priest. One said: "Louis, thank you for the inspiration of your life and ministry and for your friendship. Rest in Peace."

Another wrote: "Ah sad news, always made mass interesting for us kids in Darndale many moons ago. RIP Father." A third said: "Rest in Peace Fr McDermott. He was a great priest and he always got involved in all the youth projects in Darndale."

A fourth wrote: "Sad news he was so loved and respected in his old parish of Holy Cross, rest peacefully Fr Mac."
