Tributes paid to former Motherwell and Rangers keeper Billy Thomson

Tributes have flooded in for former Motherwell, Rangers and Scotland goalkeeper Billy Thomson, who has passed away today aged 64.

Perhaps best known for his spell at Dundee United from 1984 to 1991, Thomson starred for several Scottish clubs, including St Mirren, Motherwell and Rangers.

He then became a coach at Rangers from 2001 to 2007, before moving to Kilmarnock and Scotland, where he worked alongside boss Steve Clarke.

Thomson played for Dundee United in the 1987 UEFA Cup final and played two Scottish Cup finals for the Tannadice club, but missed out to Alan Main for the legendary 1991 final, which Motherwell won 4-3.

He then moved to Fir Park where he spent three years, before moving on to Rangers.

A whole host of clubs have paid tribute to the man who played more than 500 times over a 48-year playing and coaching career.

Motherwell's statement said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former goalkeeper Billy Thomson.

Though Thomson never played for them, Hamilton Accies said: "All at Accies are very saddened to learn of the passing of Billy Thomson, a distinguished keeper and keeper coach, and a friend to many here."

Having played seven times for Scotland from 1980 to 1983, the Scottish FA said: "We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of former Scotland goalkeeper Billy Thomson.

"Billy won seven caps for Scotland across a decorated domestic career and was part of Steve Clarke's backroom staff with Scotland and Kilmarnock.

"Our thoughts are with his loved ones."
