Tributes paid to Cardiff man killed in crash that closed M4

A family has paid tribute to a "loving partner, proud father and son" who was killed after a crash on the M4. Emergency services were called at around 2:30pm on Monday, April 17, to a crash on the road traffic collision on the M4 westbound between J36 & J37.

The crash involved a Mercedes Sprinter van colliding with the central reservation. There was a large emergency service presence at the scene with the motorway closed in both directions for a period of time. The westbound carriageway was closed for eight hours while inveatigations continued. The motorway reopened at around 10:30pm.

South Wales Police confirmed that a 44-year-old man from Cardiff had died as a result of the crash, he has now been named as Mathew Paul Sweeney, 44, from Danescourt.

Mathew’s partner, Alex James has paid the following tribute to him: “We are all deeply shocked in the sudden death of Mathew. He was a private man, a true family man through and through. He was a loving partner, proud father and son. Forever missed by everyone who knew him.

“As a family we would like to thank anybody at the scene who stopped to offer assistance. A special mention must go to all the emergency services who attended and tried their best to help him.

“What we need now as a family is time and space to try and process the magnitude of what has happened and respectfully request that we be allowed the opportunity to do so.”
