It is understood that the last race took place at around 9pm and at around 9.45 pm the Valentia Lifeboat and the Rescue 115 helicopter at Shannon were both launched in response to the incident, according to Valentia Coastguard.

He was taken from the water and, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

The body of the man was removed from the scene by ambulance to the mortuary in University Hospital Kerry.

He was later named locally as 53-year-old Brendan Teahan, who is a married man, and a well-known fisherman according to reports.

A garda spokesperson said: “A file will be prepared for the Coroner,” and also confirmed that they are treating the matter as a tragic accident.

Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Cahill, a family friend, led tributes and told RTE News: "The whole area is in shock. Brendan was a most sincere, generous man.

"He was a great husband, a great neighbour, and a great friend. He loved fishing. He loved regattas.”

Meanwhile, on Monday, the chairman of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Francis Flynn also extended his sympathies to Brendan’s family and friends at the monthly meeting of the council.
