Tributes paid as long-serving North Ayrshire councillor Alan Munro passes away

Tributes have been paid following the death of a well-known former North Ayrshire councillor.

Alan Munro, who represented the towns of Stevenston and Saltcoats during an 18-year stretch in local politics, passed away on Sunday, April 17.

The former Labour stalwart first appeared on a ballot paper in 1999.

Following a Parkinson's Disease diagnosis in 2015 he revealed his intention to step down at the 2017 council elections.

But after medication stablised his condition, he had a changed of heart and stood again - this time as an independent - only to ask the electorate to vote for Labour candidate John Sweeney ahead of him.

Mr Sweeney, who was duly elected, this week led the tributes to the long-serving politician. He said: "I was saddened to hear of Alan’s death and certainly benefited from his guidance after my election. “

Donald Reid, North Ayrshire Labour group secretary added: "Alan enjoyed working away in the back ground for his constituents without desiring publicity for his actions for most of his work.

"He certainly put forward what he thought was best for Stevenston more than once. Alan chaired the Social Services committee for a period in a period of considerable demand and reform.

"The group extend our sympathies to his extended family."

Away from politics, Alan was involved with the West of Scotland Pressure Group and the Ayrshire branch of Parkinson’s UK.
