A young barman who died in a horrific crash in the US at the weekend was a “friendly young man who was always good fun”.
Heartbroken pals and former colleagues of Daniel James Slattery, who worked part-time in Slattery’s pub on Dublin’s Grand Canal Street, for the past six years, said he was “most pleasant”. The 23-year-old, who is the nephew of Irial Slattery, the owner of Slattery’s, is originally from Rathgar in South Dublin and was living and working in Oregon along with his 24-year-old pal Robert Sweeney, from Crumlin.
They were both travelling in a car which flipped and burst into flames on the outskirts of Oregon on Sunday. Daniel, a former student of De La Salle College in Churchtown, was pronounced dead at the scene while Robert remains in a critical condition.

The crash occurred at 4.31am, with local police confirming that it took place on the edge of the town and close to Highway 26. Slattery’s pub led the tributes, saying: “Many of you will know Dan from working part-time behind the bar in Slattery’s for the last six years while a student. He was a most pleasant, friendly young man who was always good fun.”
South Dublin councillor Dermot Lacey added: “Whenever a young person dies in such tragic circumstances, people are shocked. Our thoughts are with his family and also the family of the young man who was injured and wishing him a speedy recovery.”
Heartbroken pals have also taken to social media to pay their respects.
One friend wrote: “Daniel played for Harold’s Cross for a good few years winning a few leagues along the way. A good footballer and a nice guy.”
