Chloe Jade Mason has been remembered as an “incredible aunt” and “beautiful sister” by family members and friends after she was allegedly killed by two men in what authorities have labelled a “targeted attack”.
In the early hours of December 22, Mason, 23, was found unconscious and not breathing on Railway Parade in Caboolture, Queensland.
Authorities attempted to resuscitate Mason at the scene but despite their efforts, she was unable to be saved and was declared dead.
Police allege that Mason was chased down, assaulted and shot dead by two men in what has been labelled a “targeted attack”.
At the time of writing, the two men are still at large.
In a statement to The Courier Mail, Mason’s sister, Danni Mason, described her as a “beautiful” and “incredible woman”, adding that the loss has “devastated our family”.
“Chloe was a beautiful 23-year-old who was loved by many. She was a daughter, a sister, an aunt and a friend,” she began.
“This loss has devastated our family and we struggle to come to terms with this so close to the holidays.
“As sisters, we grieve for the things she won’t experience, all the things we aren’t able to share and the memories we won’t make. She was an incredible woman.”
Another sister, Hannah McKone, has started a GoFundMe for Mason’s funeral, which has already surpassed its goal of $5K.
“I’m fundraising on behalf of my little sister Chloe,” McKone began in the description of the online fundraiser.
“Being so close to Christmas her family has no savings or financial means to give her a funeral.
“We are graciously asking for help and support in this. All funds donated will be directly utilised for Chloe’s funeral service.”
In a statement to 9News, McKone described her beloved sister as an “incredible aunt” and “loyal sister” who “changed the lives of everyone around her”.
“Chloe was our beautiful sister, we love her deeply and her loss is hard to come to terms with, this close to the holidays too,” Mckone told the publication.
“She was an incredible aunt to her nieces and nephews and a loyal sister. She would’ve gone to the ends of the earth for her family.
“Chloe was the strongest girl I’ve ever known and she changed the lives of everyone around her.”
On Sunday, December 22, Moreton District Crime Group Detective Inspector David Harbison said police allege the woman was assaulted and chased by two men down the street.
It is believed the pair fired off several shots, one being fatal, with one witness claiming they heard “about three or four gunshots and then a little bit of whimpering”.
Investigators say they don’t yet know the motive behind the attack and that they’ve established a task force of local and specialist homicide detectives to help bring answers to Mason’s family.
“It’s a tragedy to lose such a young life in such a violent manner so we will get to the bottom of it, it’s the best we can do for the family at the moment,” Harbison said.
Harbinson has urged those involved to come forward and “do the right thing”.
“There’s people out there that know who these people are so to them do the right thing,” Harbison said.
“A young 23-year-old has lost a life in tragic circumstances so do the right thing.”
At the time of writing, investigators have made no arrests and have yet to locate the weapon used in Mason’s attack.
According to journalist and femicide researcher Sherele Moody, who also founded the Red Heart Campaign, Mason is the 99th woman to be killed in Australia in 2024.
