Tributes flow following death of beloved Dublin pub owner

The owner of a popular Dalkey pub has passed away surrounded by family.

Founder of Finnegan's of Dalkey, Daniel Finnegan, passed away "very peacefully" on April 9. He was 95-years-old and died at home and surrounded by "his loving family". The Cavan-born man opened the pub in 1970 and his sons Donal, Paul, and Alan all became involved in the management of the business.

According to his death notice, "he is missed by his family" which includes his wife Colleen, his seven children, his children-in-law and his thirteen grandchildren, as well as his extended family, customers, the staff members of his pub and his many friends. His death was also announced on the pub's Twitter account where customers, fellow businesses and friends expressed their condolences to the family.

Dan was described by many as "a lovely man", "a true gentleman" and "a kind soul". One person wrote: "Very sad news and condolences to the Finnegan family. Dan was a gentleman, a true Dalkey legend, and we will all miss him. Rest in Peace Dan and keep a watchful eye on the Heavenly pub in the sky above."

Another added: "Donal and family, so sorry for your loss! Always remember when we got Micheal Bublé to sing happy birthday for your mum in the Four Seasons! Great family pub! Great tradition."

He was also described as "an iconic man" who was leaving "an incredible legacy" for family, friends and community. A customer wrote: "A legend in his own right. Fond memories and condolences to all. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

Dan will be reposing tomorrow at Quinn's Funeral Home in Glasthule from 4pm to 6pm. He will then be moved to the Church of the Assumption in Dalkey for a Funeral Mass at 11:30am, followed by a burial in Deansgrange Cemetety.
