Tributes Flow After Bianca Jones, 19, Dies From Suspected Methanol Poisoning In Thailand

Messages of condolences, love and support for the Jones family have begun to flow in after 19-year-old Aussie Bianca Jones died in Thailand following a suspected poisoning in Laos.

Jones, alongside her bestie Holly Bowles, who is also 19, were travelling through Vang Vieng, Laos, before they fell critically ill after consuming alcohol allegedly tainted with methanol in Vang Vieng, Laos.

After spending days in separate Thai hospitals on life support, Jones’ family confirmed their beloved sister and daughter had passed away.

In a statement to the Herald Sun, the family shared that she was “surrounded by love” and are “comforted by the knowledge that her incredible spirit touched so many lives during her time with us.”

Following the tragic news, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his condolences to the Jones family, stating that their situation is “every parents’ worst fear and nightmare” in Parliament.

“Our first thoughts at this moment are with her family and friends who are grieving a terrible and cruel loss,” he shared.

“This is every parents’ worst fear and a nightmare no-one should have to endure.

“Bianca’s trip should have been a joyous time and a source of fond memories in years to come.”

Zoe Daniel, Goldstein MP, also paid tribute to the teen who was a member of her community.

“They are suffering pain that no-one should have to experience,” she said.

“To the families of these two young Aussie girls who just headed off on an adventure together, I know that so many members of our community are connected to these girls, to these families.

“I feel your grief. Our hearts are broken.”

In a tribute post shared by the pair’s football club, Beaumaris Football Club, friends and family have left their condolences for Jones and her family, as well as their support for Bowles.

“Sincerest condolences to Bianca’s family and friends at this unimaginably tragic time, thinking of you all,” one friend wrote.

“Rest easy now beautiful Bianca. Keep fighting Holly. I don’t know either of you but this unfortunate situation has hit home for me. Thinking of the footy club family, the girl’s families and friends through this horrible time,” another friend commented.

At the time of writing, Bowles is currently on life-support in Bangkok Hospital.

Bowles’ father, Shaun Bowles, thanked the public for their support and asked for some privacy as they attempted to navigate this difficult time.

“We’d just like to thank everyone from back home for all the support and love that we’re receiving,” he said, per ABC News.

“But we’d also like for people to appreciate right now we just need privacy so we can spend as much time as we can with Holly.”

The incident, which has been dubbed as a suspected mass poisoning, has left four people dead, including one American man and two Danish women, aged 19 to 20, and many others hospitalised, including a New Zealand tourist.

Laotian authorities have launched a major investigation into the incident.
