The heartbroken family of a talented footballer who died after being hit by an Audi S3 at a car meet said the 'sweet angel' will never be forgotten. Sam Harding, 20, was struck by the motor on Sunday night as car lovers gathered for an organised get together at an industrial estate in Warrington, Cheshire.
Police detained the uninjured driver of the car, a 21-year-old man from Leeds, West Yorks., on suspicion causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody today (Mon).
Sam, a talented midfielder who played for Glossop North End, had been in attendance at the meet, police said. In a statement released by police, his family said: “Our beautiful son was tragically taken away from us on Sunday 10 April 2022.
"A much loved son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to many. We will never ever forget you Sam and will love you forever.
"Rest in peace sweet angel, love Mum, Dad and Amy xx.”
Cheshire Police said officers were called to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian on Kingsland Grange in Woolston, Warrington. Upon arrival, they found Sam, who was rushed to hospital but he died despite the best efforts of medics.
Detectives probing the incident have appealed for witnesses and video footage. Sergeant Simon Degg said; “Enquiries in relation to this incident are in the early stages and we are committed to doing everything we can to establish what has taken place.
“We know that there were a large number of people present at the ‘car meet’ and as part of our investigation we are keen to hear from witnessed the collision.
“The same goes for anyone with any video footage from the event – both of the collision itself and before and after the incident.
“I’d urge anyone with any information, no matter how small, to get in touch.”
