Trial Reveals Coercion Attempts In Women's World Cup Incident

The former president of Spain's soccer federation Luis Rubiales, left, leaves a court with his lawyer Olga Tubau on the outskirts of Madrid, Spain, Monday Feb. 3, 2025 where he is on trial for his uns

In a recent court hearing, troubling allegations emerged regarding the conduct of former Spanish federation president Luis Rubiales following the 2023 Women's World Cup. The brother of player Jenni Hermoso and a teammate testified that there were attempts to pressure Hermoso into downplaying an unsolicited kiss by Rubiales during the awards ceremony.

Rafael Hermoso revealed that former national team coach Jorge Vilda asked him to persuade Jenni to record a video with Rubiales to suggest she was comfortable with the kiss. However, Hermoso and other players stated that Jenni felt coerced and distressed by the situation.

Rubiales faces charges of sexual assault for the kiss and coercion for allegedly trying to manipulate Hermoso's response. Vilda and two other federation members are also on trial for coercion, with all four denying any wrongdoing.

Jenni Hermoso maintains that she did not consent to the kiss, while Rubiales claims it was consensual. The incident sparked widespread outrage in Spain, highlighting concerns about sexism in sports and society.

Witnesses testified that Hermoso was pressured multiple times by federation members to downplay the kiss, with Vilda allegedly suggesting that it would be in everyone's best interest. However, Hermoso's family and teammates supported her decision not to comply with the requests.

The trial, which is expected to last at least 10 days, has drawn significant attention. Rubiales, who resigned and was banned by FIFA following the incident, has denied the charges and labeled the proceedings as a 'witch hunt'.

Prosecutors and player associations are seeking jail time and fines for Rubiales, as well as penalties for the other defendants involved. The case underscores the importance of addressing issues of coercion and misconduct in sports governance.

As the trial continues, the impact of these allegations on the broader sports community remains a focal point of discussion.
