Testimony resumed in the trial of a man accused of killing Georgia nursing student Laken Riley. The defendant, who entered the U.S. illegally two years ago, is facing charges of murder and other crimes in connection with Riley's February killing.
According to FBI testimony, the defendant took selfies on the day of Riley's murder, wearing a black Adidas baseball cap and a dark hooded jacket. Surveillance footage showed a man in a similar cap at the scene of the crime.
Police officers questioned individuals living in the defendant's apartment, noting injuries on some of them. A crime scene specialist testified that a dark hooded jacket found in a trash bin had Riley's blood on it.
Witnesses identified the defendant in security footage and confirmed seeing him wear the jacket. The trial began with emotional testimony from Riley's loved ones and law enforcement officers.
The prosecution alleges that the defendant encountered Riley on the University of Georgia campus and killed her during a struggle. The defense maintains there is insufficient evidence linking the defendant to the crime.
The case has sparked national debate over immigration policies, as the defendant was reported to have entered the U.S. illegally in 2022.
The defendant faces multiple charges, including malice murder, felony murder, kidnapping, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.
