A former white Ohio police officer is currently on trial for the shooting death of Andre Hill, a Black man, nearly four years ago. The officer, Adam Coy, a 17-year veteran of the Columbus police force, is facing charges of murder, reckless homicide, and related offenses in connection with the incident.

The fatal shooting occurred on December 22, 2020, when Coy responded to a neighbor's noise complaint. Coy, who was subsequently fired, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His defense attorney claims that Coy believed Hill was holding a silver revolver, although Hill was actually holding a cellphone.

Jury selection for Coy's trial began on Monday, with the prosecution presenting police body camera footage showing Hill emerging from a garage with a cellphone in his hand moments before being shot by Coy. Despite Hill lying injured for about 10 minutes, officers at the scene delayed providing medical assistance until later.

Following the shooting, the city of Columbus faced public outcry, leading to the resignation of the police chief and a $10 million settlement with Hill's family. In response, Columbus City Council passed Andre’s Law, requiring officers to provide immediate medical aid to injured suspects.

Coy's personnel file revealed a history of complaints, including more than three dozen filed against him since he joined the force in 2002, with a significant number related to use of force. However, most complaints were deemed 'unfounded' or 'not sustained.'

Despite attempts by Coy's legal team to move the trial out of Columbus due to extensive publicity, the trial is proceeding in the city. Andre Hill, a father and grandfather, was known for his culinary skills and aspirations of owning a restaurant.
