Trey McBride sets new single-season record vs. 49ers

Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is already having one of the best seasons a tight end has had in franchise history. After tying the franchise’s single-season record for receptions by a tight end with 56.

It didn’t take long to set the record against the 49ers.

He caught an 11-yard pass from Kyler Murray on the second play from scrimmage, giving him 57 on the season. He added a 38-yard catch on the possession before Arizona took a 7-0 lead on a James Conner two-yard touchdown.

McBride, who started the season with only eight receptions in the first five weeks, has emerged as a budding star.

He will continue to set a record with every catch he makes the rest of the season. He entered the game with 610 receiving yards. Only one player — Hall of Famer Jackie Smith — had more receiving yards in a season.

McBride, if he reaches 811 yards, will have the second-highest single-season total by a tight end. Smith’s 1,205 receiving yards is the highest total by a tight end in franchise history.
