An interesting twist was thrown into the 49ers quarterback roller coaster Wednesday when Trey Lance didn’t take the field with the team for practice according to reporters at the team facility.
Lance’s absence comes on the heels of reports that Sam Darnold would be named the team’s backup QB and that the club was exploring all options with Lance. Presumably that means keeping, releasing or trading him.
Whether his absence is related to that news or something else is still unclear, but the timing is certainly notable since Lance hasn’t missed a practice all offseason and hasn’t been a problem in the locker room at any point over his three years with the club.
Darnold being named the backup to QB Brock Purdy may just be the first domino to fall in the 49ers QB room.
