Trevor Noah shocked viewers of The Daily Show on Thursday when he announced he is quitting his hosting duties.
The presenter, 38, has been in the hot seat for the last seven years after taking over from Jon Stewart in 2015.
He made his announcement to the audience in the closing segment of Thursday's edition, but stopped short of saying when his actual exit will take place.
Trevor expressed his gratitude for an "amazing" and "wild" seven years as he reminisced over his journey.
He then confessed: "I realised after the seven years my time is up, but in the most beautiful way. Honestly, I've loved hosting the show. It's been one of my greatest challenges. It's been one of my greatest joys. I've loved trying to figure out how to make people laugh even when the stories are particularly s***y on the worst days."
He continued his speech looking visibly emotional, saying he believes now is time to call it a day after admitting he misses being on the road in his career.
He joked that although he's not good at saying his goodbyes, he won't be disappearing, but failed to open up on what his next project might be.
Reeling off all of his thank you messages, Trevor concluded: "We'll figure out the timings and the whens. I'll still be here for the time being, but all I can say is thank you very much."
He ended by making a love heart symbol with his hands to the cameras and audience, which gave him a standing ovation.
Fans were quick to took to social media to send their well-wishes and share their upset at his decision.
One Twitter user wrote: "NOOOOOOOO, don’t go Bro!!! Your [sic] the only reason I enjoy watching the show! It’ll never be the same without where it’s like yours now. No one can ever take your spot of what made the show special, we’ll miss you Man."
Another added: "Wow, I wasn’t expecting that news. Sending you love and wishing you all the best Trevor! I’m glad you’re doing what you feel is right for you. It’s been so fun watching you the last 7 years. You’ll definitely be missed, and I can’t wait to see you on tour."
Paramount Global cable network later thanked Trevor in a statement following the news unfolding. It read: "We are grateful to Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years. With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps.
"As we look ahead, we’re excited for the next chapter in the 25+ year history of 'The Daily Show' as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them."
The news is the latest late-night shakeup stateside following James Corden's decision to leave CBS' Late Late Show. Samantha Bee's Full Frontal was also axed from the small screen.
