As the Jacksonville Jaguars search for a new head coach is underway, what would quarterback Trevor Lawrence like to see in a new hire?
Admittedly, Lawrence said that he, of course, would be partial to an offensive play-caller given his position and does like the idea of implementing an offensive system that can be in place for years to come as the two grow together.
However, Lawrence’s desire for what characteristics he wants in that role go much deeper than just that.
“There’s a lot of things,” said Lawrence on Thursday. “But just as far as a leader, you want the right guy that’s going to be the right leader and voice for your team and set that culture.
“Just to be a tough team–mentally, physically that can withstand the ups and downs of a season. I think that that was something that two years ago we did a great job of, but whatever reason this year we weren’t able to do that.”
So far the Jaguars have put in 10 interview requests with a good mix of both offensive and defensive play-callers.
As far as Lawrence’s thoughts on any of those specific candidates, he didn’t have any specific insights on any one candidate but did say that it seems like the organization is doing “all the right things” and attempting to interview all of the top candidates this hiring cycle.
Lawrence does believe that owner Shad Khan and GM Trent Baalke do value his opinion and that conversations about the Jaguars head coaching situation have been had. Although Lawrence reiterates that he’s the quarterback and doesn’t want to “cross any boundaries” or do more than his own job.
Of course, scheme matters, whether it be an offensive or defensive hire, but getting the right person for the job to help Jacksonville get back on track both on and off the field will be a crucial element as well.
“I think from a leader standpoint, whether it’s an offensive coach or defensive coach just a guy that’s going to instill that culture,” Lawrence added.” That toughness into our team and just that confidence that it doesn’t matter when we’re playing, who we’re playing, just spot the ball and we can beat anybody. And just a tough team that other teams don’t want to play against.”
