Trevor Lawrence: ‘Just kind of embarrassing’ to score 9 points

The Jacksonville Jaguars had plenty of chances Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs, but didn’t capitalize. Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars offense never found the end zone in a 17-9 loss to the Chiefs, despite three trips to the red zone.

“We’re better than that. We’re a better team. We’re a better offense than that,” Lawrence said after the loss. “And I think that’s what’s disappointing, is when you know what you’re capable of.

“We’ve got so many weapons. Like, we got to be able to put points on the board and score. And that’s just kind of embarrassing.”

Last year, the Jaguars were held under 14 points in just one game: a 13-6 home loss to the Houston Texans. Lawrence compared the Sunday loss to the Chiefs to that 2022 defeat, saying that — just like last year — the Jaguars offense wasted a strong showing from the defense.

But unlike that loss to the Texans, Jacksonville had a chance to make a statement to the entire NFL on Sunday. With the defending Super Bowl champions coming to town, the Jaguars were hoping to beat the team that ended their 2022 season in the Divisional Round of the playoffs and prove that there’s a contender in Duval.

“You kind of had that fresh in your mind all offseason,” Lawrence said of the loss to the Chiefs in January. “And the schedule comes out, you got Week 2 and Kansas City. … then [we] lay an egg offensively. It’s pretty frustrating.

“Yeah, pretty frustrating. Especially, like I said, when you feel like you let your defense down when they played so well.”

Lawrence completed 22 of his 41 passes for 216 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. The Jaguars finished with 271 yards of total offense. Last season, Jacksonville eclipsed 300 yards in 14 of its 17 regular season games and both of its playoff games.
