Trevor Carson Celtic pain revisited as St Mirren keeper lifts lid on Stephen Robinson life-changing transfer block

Trevor Carson still has thoughts of what might have been when Stephen Robinson blocked a life-changing move to Celtic.

Now he and Robinson are aiming to pull off a major Scottish Cup shock when St Mirren take on Ange Postecoglou’s side at Parkhead.

The Northern Irish keeper was on the brink of a switch from Motherwell in 2019 when Robinson had to pull the plug when a deal for Carson’s replacement fell through. The keeper said: “I made a joke in the press the week after it fell through that my partner and I played a game of Let’s See What We Could Have Bought!

“A few weeks later there was an Old Firm game and Scott Bain was in the team. Of course you sit at home thinking it could have been you.

“But what’s made for you won’t pass you. That’s my mum’s old saying and everything happens for a reason. You’d torture yourself if you sat and thought about things.

"It was Robbo who stopped me going to Celtic and we still joke about it now. He winds me up by saying it wasn’t the right move for me and I’m like, ‘Aye, tell my bank balance that!’ We can laugh about it now, but it was a tough time for me.

“At one point the deal was done, but it fell through because of something stupid. Motherwell were getting the boy Freddie Woodman, but halfway up the road Aberdeen called him and he went there instead.

“That would have left Motherwell with no goalie. We had a game that night against Hibs and there were a million things going through my head. It was a tough time, but I don’t sit here and think about what might have happened.”

Saints were the last side to beat Celtic but they lost 4-0 on their last visit to Parkhead. Carson added: “I’m buzzing for it but I’ll just prepare as normal.”
