Trent Alexander-Arnold sends Man City threat in Liverpool rallying cry

Trent Alexander-Arnold says Liverpool “expect” to win at least one trophy every season - and they could win THREE this year.

Liverpool begin their Champions League knock-out campaign at Inter Milan and also face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday week and face Norwich in the FA Cup fifth round.

Alexander-Arnold insists the Champions League is wide open this season, they are better as a team than when they won it in 2019 and are still ready to “pounce” if Manchester City slip up in the title race.

Liverpool have become a winning machine under Jurgen Klopp and Alexander-Arnold says the whole dressing room believes they can be a match for anyone.

Alexander-Arnold said: “As a team we expect ourselves to go as far as we can in competitions. Looking at it now, there is only the league that is not in our hands.

“We believe we can beat anyone on our day if we get it right. It is only the league and anything can happen. The other three competitions we believe we are able to win them.

“Every competition we are in we feel we can win, especially the Champions League. We have improved as a team, leant how to win and adjust. We’ve had good moments and bad moments and it is about winning - it is easier said than done but we believe we can do it.

“There is an expectation now, as a team and players, to win trophies. One trophy a season minimum is what we have to achieve. With the squad and manager we have we should be winning trophies. It is expected now.

“It is not the stage where we are happy to get in finals and it is day out. There is expectation now to want to do it every season.

"We are showing we can compete on multiple fronts. To have a place in all four competitions is good for us and we can add silverware early doors."

Liverpool are nine points behind City in the Premier League but do have a game in hand and they face Pep Guardiola’s men at the Etihad on April 9 so there is no giving up just yet.

Alexander-Arnold admits that there is some disappointment they have not won more trophies - but says lifting the big ones has been a huge statement of success.

He said: “We want to keep as much pressure on as we can, winning the game in hand gets it to six points and then keep winning. It’s not in our hands so we can only win our games. We have to make sure we are in a position to pounce if they slip up at some point.

“I think cup competitions are always wide open, you see upsets all the time and shocks. I wouldn’t say anyone is favourite. Leagues are a bit different when you look at squad depth and there are favourites. Cup competitions are a different ball game.

“We don't feel disappointed that we haven’t won enough trophies as the ones we have won are the biggest and best you can get your hands on. Not making any digs but you look at Man City’s amazing team and they haven’t been able to lift the Champions League.

“They won a couple of Prems but haven’t been able to win the Champions League. We've won both over the last few years and it shows you we can do do it in both competitions.”

Alexander-Arnold, 23, also believes experience through winning and his own mentality will help him improve as a player.

He added: “For me, I still see it as early days. I don’t class myself as a young player but in terms of career, it is 15 to 20 yrs these days and I feel I am in the early stages.

“There is still so much room for improvement and I have more potential to give and achieve. I am not thinking about what I have done but how I can consistently win things every season.”
