Trent Alexander-Arnold makes admission about Liverpool assist against West Ham

Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that his assist for Sadio Mane's crucial goal against West Ham United at Anfield on Saturday was more of a 'cross-shot'.

Senegalese Mane stroked home his 12th Premier League goal of the season in the 27th minute after getting on the end of a ball hit across the 18 yard box by Alexander-Arnold.

A VAR check confirmed that Mane was onside and goal would stand, in what proved to be the only goal of the match, handing the Reds another vital three points in their pursuit of Manchester City.

But Alexander-Arnold conceded that there was probably an element of speculation in his delivery.

Speaking to Liverpool's official website, he said: “I think it was a bit of a cross-shot, to be honest.

“That’s what I’ll comment on it - a cross-shot. Just try to hit the target and anything can happen, and Sadio has anticipated it well and been able to tuck it in.

“We had a similar one against Atletico (Madrid) at home earlier on in the season, so maybe we need to keep doing that.”

Regardless of whether the pass to Mane was fully intentional or not, this was Alexander-Arnold's 16th assist of the season across all competitions - a tally that equals his personal best total from 2018/19 season.

The full-back has also weighed in with two Premier League goals during the current campaign, helping to keep Liverpool's ambitious hopes of completing a trophy quadruple still alive in March.

He said to Liverpoolfc.com: “I want to contribute as much as I can, I want to get as many assists as I can and help the team win games, so I think that is part and parcel of my game.

“I want to be in those positions to create for the team. I’ve racked up a lot of assists so far this season and hopefully many more.

“Hopefully we’ve got a lot of games in all competitions left to play, so hopefully I can keep adding to that tally and help the team win games.”

The Reds now take a break from Premier League action to turn their attentions to the Champions League round of 16 second-leg tie against Inter Milan at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Liverpool hold a 2-0 lead from the first leg but will be wary of an attempted comeback by the Italian Champions.

However, the 23-year-old insisted that his teammates are not worrying to much about who they face.

He added: “To us, it’s not particularly about what competition we’re playing in, all of them are just as important as the other.

“So we are just trying to win every game we are playing at the minute, to be honest. There’s no secret formula to it. Every game is as important as the next and as important as the previous.

“We want to win every game we are in; we’ve been able to do that a lot of times over the last few years, so it’s about keeping that momentum up with the help of the whole squad.”
