Trent Alexander-Arnold attempts Real Madrid mind games as Liverpool plot miracle escape

Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has lumped all the pressure on Real Madrid ahead of their Champions League clash.

The Reds take on the defending champions in Madrid on Wednesday night, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake. Carlo Ancelotti's side thumped Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg of the last-16 tie at Anfield last month and are expected to progress to the next round.

Due to Real's advantage, Alexander-Arnold, 24, believes Liverpool won't "feel any pressure" at the Bernabeu. The England international has also highlighted the amount of comebacks Liverpool have pulled off in the past, with perhaps their greatest yet in sight.

Liverpool famously recovered from three goals down to beat AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final. They replicated that achievement against Barcelona in May 2019 to secure their spot in that season's final. Alexander-Arnold played in the latter game.

"We're going to have to go and do something special in Spain, to be honest," Alexander-Arnold told the Liverpool ECHO. "But, you know, it's one of them where it's similar to the Barcelona game where we kind of go over there with nothing to lose.

"They are the one with a three-goal lead and you know if we come out of there and we don't win then OK, we were three goals down, it is what it is. So we don't feel any pressure."

Liverpool established a two-goal lead during the first leg thanks to goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah. Yet Real hit back, with Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema both scoring braces. Eder Militao also scored for the visitors, capping off a huge result.

The Champions League is Liverpool's last chance of winning a major trophy this season. The Community Shield winners failed to defend their FA Cup and Carabao Cup crowns, while their Premier League campaign has not gone to plan. They are sixth in the table.

Despite Liverpool's heavy defeat in the first leg, Alexander-Arnold is full of confidence. He added, "We will go there to win the game, to try and get through. We're not just going to go there and think that it's already done and we're out. We still believe.

"We know it is going to be very difficult but we know we're capable of scoring goals in games and we're going to have to have a near perfect game to go through to the next round but we never say never."

Liverpool have endured an indifferent spell since their humiliating defeat to Real. They recorded wins against Wolves and Manchester United - hammering the latter side 7-0 in a record-equalling triumph - but failed to beat Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

Real have also suffered some disappointing results since their famous win at Anfield. The reigning European champions failed to beat Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Betis, although they did beat Espanyol 3-1 at home in their most recent outing.
