Trent Alexander-Arnold already has the Liverpool competition Jamie Carragher called for

There has been plenty said about Trent Alexander-Arnold in recent days and weeks.

Shortly after the defeat to Real Madrid last week, Jamie Carragher spoke at length over the lack of competition Trent has had at right-back and that Liverpool need to consider changing that to bring the best out of him. Speaking from experience, having pressure on you helps as a player. That competition used to make me play better for Liverpool because you know there are others waiting to take your place.

In terms of the lack of competition in Trent's position, Joe Gomez will probably end up become a permanent right-back in my eyes after the challenges he has faced in central defence at times and I think he could do really well there. Calvin Ramsay, meanwhile, hasn’t had the chance to prove himself due to injury and has been rather unfortunate.

I am sure Trent will get it together. He will get a rest now after being left out the England squad and it gives him the chance now to have a rest and take time to think. If he’s’ not being selected at international level and is being criticised for club performances, it’s something he has to sort out. It’s only him and the manager who can do that between them. He has so much going for him and is only young in football terms. All players go through rough patches, he just has to come out the other side of it.

Impossible to tell whether international break will benefit us

Has this international break come at a good time for Liverpool? I’ve no idea as you don’t know what Liverpool team you’re going to get at the minute. It’s a toss of a coin. We watched them humiliate Manchester United and were then shown up at Bournemouth, who lost to Aston Villa 3-0 at the weekend. That says everything about our season.

We’re likely to turn up against Arsenal next month and beat them but then go to somewhere like Southampton and lose. Unless something drastically changes with our away form, we are not going to make top four. If it carries on the way it is, we will probably end up sixth. At Anfield, things will look after themselves.

Sad to see Micky Mellon leave Tranmere

Micky Mellon has been a great servant to Tranmere Rovers and loves the club, so I was sad to hear about his departure on Sunday afternoon. It just hasn’t happened for him this time. What he has done for the club has been phenomenal and he will leave with a heavy heart. He is such a likeable person and I wish him all the best. Hopefully the club can now find someone to take them to the next stage.
