Travis thanked The Office – for winning the band a new generation of young fans. The band’s hit Sing was the soundtrack to a famous scene in the US version of the sitcom, a montage of clips showing main characters Pam and Jim falling in love over several series.
And more than 20 years after the song was released, the emotional TV moment is still generating new interest in the Glasgow rockers. Sing has now racked up an incredible 138million streams on Spotify.
Bassist Dougie Payne said: “We were so lucky that they chose to use [Sing] because it did open up a whole new bunch of people who were like, ‘What’s that song?’ It was a powerful, lovely, emotional moment and so it just seemed to be a good marriage of the show, the song, the moment – kind of like synergy. We were delighted.”
Payne, 50, told the Everything Fab Four podcast: “It doesn’t matter how you find music. When people go, ‘Vinyl is the best thing and Spotify’s terrible,’ it doesn’t matter because music exists outside of all of that. It’s magic, real magic.”
Travis burst on to the scene in the late 90s and had No1 albums with The Man Who and The Invisible Band. Sing was in The Office US in 2010.
