Travis Scott‘s label is throwing a tantrum over Sabrina Carpenter‘s recent Billboard chart victory. It seems the rapper can’t handle being second fiddle to a former Disney star.
Carpenter’s latest album, Short N’ Sweet made a stunning debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, moving an impressive 362,000 equivalent album units in its first week.
Hot on its heels, Scott’s re-release of his 2014 mixtape Days Before Rodeo secured the No. 2 spot with just over 361,000 units. The margin between the two was razor-thin, with less than 1,000 units separating them.
Not content with the silver medal, Scott’s label, Cactus Jack Records, has isn’t taking this L lying down. They’ve fired off a strongly worded letter to Billboard and Luminate, the company responsible for compiling chart data.
The label is claiming that the chart methodology used was “unreliable and incomplete,” suggesting that some last-minute sales that could have pushed Scott to the top spot weren’t included in the final tally.
Adding fuel to the fire, it’s been revealed that Scott’s team released eight different versions of “Days Before Rodeo” in the final hours of the tracking week. This strategy, reminiscent of tactics used by pop artists like Taylor Swift to boost sales, seems to have fallen just short of securing the No. 1 spot.
Luminate, for their part, is standing firm on their data. In a response to the dispute, they stated they are “confident that our numbers are correct”, effectively dismissing Cactus Jack’s claims.
Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter appears to be taking the high road, focusing on celebrating her first No. 1 album and preparing for her upcoming tour.
The singer has yet to comment publicly on the controversy surrounding her chart victory. She’s probably sipping on an espresso, unbothered by the drama.
As for Scott, maybe he should take a cue from his own lyrics and “stop trying to be God”.
