“You need to imagine you’ve just got home and we’ve walked into your living room and started to play”, Travis frontman Fran Healy tells the 2,500-strong crowd beneath the beautiful backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
And not only are Travis ‘in your living room’ but fans are also told they’re going to be playing their third album - The Invisible Band - from start to finish before kicking off their two hour set with Sing.
As soon as the the first chorus comes around the crowd have already burst into fine voice with Fran telling them at the end of the song “Oh my God. It’s going to be a good one!"
In stark contrast, the reflective Dear Diary follows before Fran recalls how he used to be on the school debating team with comedian Frankie Boyle at Holyrood Secondary School.
“I was s**t. He was amazing," says Fran.
"We were in a physics class and we were shown a circle and told that this was the shape of the universe. 10 years later this happened…"
The band burst into Side and once again the crowd belt out the chorus with passion before the band take it down a notch and ask for the house lights up.
"We're going to do a wee busk," Fran tells fans before asking: "Are you in good voice?"
When they roar back he tells them: "I believe you!"
The rest of the band join Fran up front and with their arms around each other the opening chords to Flowers In The Window are strum and the entire Princes Street Gardens descends into the biggest sing-along of the night.
The mood is electric and at one point bassist Dougie jumps in to strum Fran's guitar as he claps along with the crowd.
As the band play through the other album tracks a poignant Fran reflects on the night saying: "We've been married for 30 years and are still very much in love. You’re seeing proper live music and proper live friendship.
"This is the last track from The Invisible Band. We're going to go off and pretend we’re finishing then come back and play all the hits!"
On returning to the stage and just before the band play All I Want To Do Is Rock, Fran explains: "We're going to shake it up a bit and go off-piste. If Travis was a country this would be our national anthem."
Happy, Writing To Reach You, Driftwood and Closer all provide more opportunity for fans to sing their heart out and after ending the latter Fran again praises the "amazing" audience adding: "Thanks so much for singing."
Then came the biggest surprise of the night - a tribute to Grease star Olivia Newton-John who died from cancer earlier this month.
The band belted out You're The One That I Want before rocking out to Turn.
The haunting violin at the start of Why Does It Always Rain On Me signals that the end is sadly near and with Fran reminding the crowd of the 'pogo' tradition in the last chorus and Princes Street Gardens erupts into a sea of pogo jumpers as Fran concludes: "It's so good to be home!"
And with that Travis left the 'living room' - don't forget to turn off the lights boys!
