Travis Bazzana, the top overall pick in the MLB amateur draft from Oregon State, officially signed his first professional contract with the Cleveland Guardians. The contract, reportedly worth $8.95 million, was finalized at Progressive Field. While the slot value for the first pick was set at $10.57 million by MLB, Bazzana expressed understanding that he wouldn't receive the full slot amount.

The 21-year-old second baseman, hailing from Australia, emphasized his desire to join a team where he could thrive, citing the playing style and identity of the Guardians as a key factor in his decision. Bazzana, standing at 6 feet and weighing 199 pounds, expressed his confidence in his agents and his eagerness to be part of the Guardians organization.

Bazzana, known for his left-handed hitting, is set to begin his professional career with Class-A Lake County and is expected to debut in the minor leagues soon. The team plays in Eastlake, Ohio, just a short drive away from downtown Cleveland.

As the first overall pick in the franchise's history and the first second baseman to achieve this milestone, Bazzana shared his excitement about joining the Guardians. He mentioned looking up to José Ramírez, the team's accomplished third baseman, and expressed his eagerness to meet and learn from him.

During his tenure at Oregon State, Bazzana showcased impressive batting skills, boasting a .360 average with 45 home runs and 165 RBIs over three seasons. In his most recent season, he excelled with a .407 batting average, 28 home runs, and 66 RBIs.

Bazzana also expressed hope that his journey in Major League Baseball would inspire sports fans in Australia to support the Guardians and follow the league closely. He acknowledged the significance of being a role model for aspiring baseball players back in his home country.

With his signing, Bazzana is poised to make a significant impact on the Guardians and leave a lasting impression on the baseball community, both in the United States and abroad.
