Travellers warned of 'severe disruption' on trains through Stockport and Macclesfield

Commuters face 'severe disruption' and cancellations through Stockport and Macclesfield this evening following an overhead wire fault.

Southbound rail services will stop at Stockport or Macclesfield train stations this evening, with some services cancelled or facing delays of around 60 minutes.

Rail replacement buses are in place for many services, with tickets being accepted on alternative routes for those affected. The closures are expected to remain in place for the rest of the day (Tuesday February 21).

On their website, National Rail said: "Overhead wire damage between Stockport and Stoke-on-Trent / Crewe means that some lines are blocked. Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised."

Passengers are advised to check the website, with a number of rail replacement buses or alternative services in place for commuters.

The routes affected are: Avanti West Coast between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston, CrossCountry between Manchester Piccadilly and Reading, Northern between Manchester Piccadilly and Stoke-on-Trent / Alderley Edge / Crewe, and Transport for Wales between Manchester Piccadilly and Cardiff Central / Carmarthen / Tenby.
