Travellers pitch up next to new £49m Gedling Access Road

Several caravans have pitched up on green space next to the £49m Gedling Access Road. A group of travellers have set up on land off the road, since named Colliery Way, near Gedling Village.

The exact time of their arrival is not known, but the caravans were first seen by residents on Wednesday, January 11. There are around six caravans on the site in addition to other vehicles.

Councillor Mike Adams, who represents Carlton East for the Conservatives on Nottinghamshire County Council, and who also sits on Gedling Borough Council, was the one who first reported the encampment. Councillor Adams said: "I was the first to report it.

"I contacted Gedling Borough Council and made them aware and Nottinghamshire County Council are aware as well. The teams are looking to communicate and try and organise the leaving of the site."

Part of the Gedling Access Road is set to be closed on Wednesday evening (January 11) so that works can be undertaken on a pothole which has appeared on the flagship road, less than a year after it first opened to motorists. Gary Wood, Head of Highways and Transport at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “We are aware of reports of travellers in the area of the Gedling Access Road and will be visiting the site to assess the situation.

"We respond to unauthorised encampments on highways and land owned by the county council and use powers for removal where appropriate, taking into account the circumstances of each case."
