Travel hack means you'll never have to pay for water at Dublin Airport again

Heading off on a trip abroad can be a costly occasion, especially if you factor in eating and drinking at the airport before stepping onto your flight.

Although some items are available at a lower cost in the duty free, airports are notorious for hiking up prices on essentials people hope to get before heading to the departure gate.

One of the biggest expenses passengers experience is caused by the liquids rule, which only allows people to bring bottles of liquids measuring up to 100ml.

The rule often leads to most people buying a new bottle of water when they get past security.

While each bottle may only cost €1 - €2.50 for a family of four, that means spending a large chunk of change just on drinks, reports the Daily Star.

Luckily, it seems there's an easy way to ensure you all stay hydrated at the airport that's completely free.

TikTok user @IsThatMike03 has shared his hack to getting free water every time you pass through the airport.

He dubbed the tip his "favourite travel airport hack".

In the clip, he showed himself taking a large 1.5l bottle through security – it was empty, so it didn't count towards his liquid allowance.

When he made it through to the airport's shopping area, Mike then approached a barman at a pub and asked him to fill the bottle with tap water.

The staff member happily did so, meaning that Mike got himself a totally free bottle of water to drink in the airport and on the plane.

Mike said: "You've got to get creative with the money-saving ideas.

"Every time I travel by plane, I like to bring an empty bottle of water to take through the airport security .

"Once I'm on the other side, I find the nearest bar or restaurant and ask them to fill it up with tap water for me."

Mike noted the price of water at terminal shops and said: "The fact that they're overcharging for it is so crazy to me."

The video has racked up over 45k views and thousands of likes.

In the comments, one person said: "Yep. The price of water, which we need to survive, is ridiculous."

"Some airports have refill stations to use, too," added another.

While a third said: "I have been doing this for years….. Especially now since they have the water bottle fillers!"

For passengers at Dublin Airport, the hack could be incredibly useful as the airport upgraded its water fountains in 2019.

Dublin Airport also made its water fountains more visible by re-branding them with new Hydration Station signage.

The Hydration Stations can be found on the Mezzanine level in Terminal 1, in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1, Departures areas in Terminals 1 and 2, immediately after security screening in Terminal 1, in all passenger boarding areas and in both baggage halls.

Dublin Airport also sells its Plane Water at €1 per bottle both in shops and via its honesty box system.
