Travel expert says Dublin Airport is 'seriously under pressure' amid calls for third terminal

A travel expert has said a third terminal is going to be needed to deal with the influx of passengers in and out of the capital very soon.

Air and Travel magazine Editor, Eoghan Corry was speaking about the necessary changes as the airport operator, daa, mulls over plans for a €265 million extension to the airport.

It is understood that the proposed development would accommodate up to four million extra passengers every year and would give way for more flights and routes to be added to the daily schedule.

Speaking to Newstalk Breakfast, Mr Corry said the plans would see around six new gates added to the terminal.

He said although this plan would ultimately reduce the current pressure on the terminal, a bigger development will be needed in the long term.

He went as far as to say: "At some stage, they are going to have to sit down and think of a third terminal."

Capacity in the terminals is already "seriously under pressure," according to the travel expert.

"We have a second runway which took a long time to put in place," he went on to say.

"It is underused but there’s no doubt we’re going to grow – in the aviation business, if you stand still, you’re going backwards.

"They need to plan for this four-and-a-half or five million extra passengers just to effectively stand still and keep Ireland functioning economically.

"So, they really have to look at their terminal capacity because that is seriously under pressure."
