Travel expert names Scottish city among top staycation locations for 2023

Aberdeen has been named among the top city break staycation spots for those looking for a weekend trip in 2023.

PA Media Travel Editor Sarah Marshall recommended the city in the North East alongside other UK hotspots such as Bristol and Norwich. She described the Granite City as Scotland's "mini metropolis", adding that few people realise just how much it has to offer.

The travel expert was listing the UK's top city breaks, offering places to go and sights to see that rival popular hotspots in mainland Europe.

"Not all city breaks feature a backdrop of concrete high rises," Sarah wrote. "Few people realise Scotland’s mini metropolis is one of the few urban spaces with a golden sandy beach on its doorstep."

As for things to do, Aberdeen was listed thanks to it being one of the best places in the UK to spot bottlenose dolphins from land.

And if you are planning to visit the city in June, you might catch the Nuart street art festival when the walls will be transformed into an "outdoor gallery".

The travel ace recommends staying at The Sandman Signature, Situated in the former Robert Gordon University, St Andrews Street Campus, which has rooms from £60 per night.

This is one of the North East's latest mentions amid a string of list-topping placements. Last month, Aberdeenshire was crowned Good Housekeeping's best holiday destination for 2023.

Beating out iconic destinations such as Aruba and the Swiss Alps, Aberdeenshire was described as "glorious" and "majestic" thanks to its breath-taking coastline. The north-eastern region was highlighted as an area filled with exciting things to do by the magazine thanks to its unique sights and its royal connections.
