Travel chaos set to last until this evening as work continues to fix derailed tram in Manchester city centre

Commuters have been warned to expect further travel disruption this evening as work continues to fix a derailed tram in Manchester city centre.

An investigation has been launched by travel bosses in the city to establish exactly how the tram came off the track, shortly after 2pm this afternoon, between Deansgate and St Peter's Square.

Passengers were safely taken off the service, heading towards the city centre, and there were no reported injuries, TfGM confirmed.

But the derailed tram, which became stranded between two sets of tracks, has caused major disruption to the rest of the network leaving many commuters forced to find an alternative route.

Engineers are said to be on site as they attempt to re-rail the tram, with work expected to take "several hours" and last into the evening.

Pictures show the Metrolink service bound for Bury stuck over two tracks between St Peter's Square and Deansgate tram stops.

One passenger onboard the tram said the service had "derailed" and had become stuck. "You think your tram ride is bad? My tram just DERAILED and is stuck over two tracks," they said on Twitter.

Onlookers described seeing nearby stations such as Deansgate-Castlefield packed with people waiting for the next tram to arrive shortly before rush hour began.

Many commuters have been forced to abandon their normal route home, with a number of bus services put on by TfGM.

No trams are currently serving St Peter's Square and a rail replacement bus is in place between Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly, and Victoria and Piccadilly.

TfGM’s Head of Operations, Alex Cropper, said: "This incident will impact services across the network into the early evening and we are sorry for any disruption to people’s journeys.

"Engineers are working to re-rail the tram as quickly as possible and we will be undertaking a full investigation to understand what has happened. I’d encourage people to check before they travel and plan their journey accordingly."
