Travel chaos continues as Spanish cabin crew unions confirm Ryanair strike plans

An end to the travel disruption that has plagued this summer looks further away than ever as Spanish cabin crew unions confirm that members working for Ryanair plan to strike four days a week until January.

The industrial action, which is backed both by the USO and Sitclpa union groups, is part of an effort to secure better pay and working conditions. The strikes will take place from Monday to Thursday every week from August 8 to January 7, reports Lincolnshire Live.

Lidia Aransanz, a leader for USO's Ryanair section, said the new strike days were a consequence of Ryanair being unable "to listen to the workers". Members are asking for 22 days of holiday and two extra months payment per year in line with Spanish laws.

Ryanair workers went on strike earlier this month, walking out for several days which fell mainly at weekends. Though disruptive to many Spanish airports, the impact was limited because the country's regulations force airlines and staff to maintain a minimum service.

The union said 11 cabin staff in Spain were fired during those recent strikes. Ryanair had accounted for 22.3% of passengers traveling via Spanish airports during the first half of the year, according to data from airport operator Aena.

With the airline operating a number of popular routes between Spain and the UK, this strike action threatens to further disrupt a summer dogged by disruptions that have extended beyond air travel.

Rail strikes taking place today mean that only one in five trains will run on around half the network, as those workers continue to protest similar grievances to those felt by Ryanair staff.
