Transylvania Shop and Coffee in Govanhill uncovers ghost sign as owner shares 'part of lost Glasgow'

Owners at Transylvania Shop and Coffee have shared "a part of lost Glasgow' after uncovering a ghost sign.

The old shop sign reads WM Ramage Campbell, an off-sales in Victoria Road which sold wine and spirits. It is believed to have closed in the 1950s before it was taken over by Alistair Steel Shoes.

Owners Daniel Radu and Alex Ghimpu made the jaw-dropping discovery while getting started on their shop refurbishment.

They said they were "very excited" and joked they are bringing "old spirits" to Glasgow.

Daniel said: "We expected something to be beneath the sign because there was another sign found in the same building shortly before we moved here. But we were still so happy.

"The shop sold alcohol and had a license so people could have drink at the tables outside. We think it actually works well, as we have our own wine cellar.

"There are older locals that remember the shop. One customer in her 90s came to buy pastry yesterday and she said she remembered it – she was very surprised to see it.

"Another guy said he remembers coming to the shop with his dad when he was around four years old."

Daniel said they are working to extend the outdoor terrace in time for summer and plant more flowers in the area to help the environment.

They also planned to swap their original black and white sign, which they created during lockdown in June 2020, and swap it for a more traditional Romanian design.

But they intend to honour the south side's heritage by keeping the old shop sign.

He added: "We want people to come and take pictures of the retro sign, so I will be making a nice frame for it. We love Glasgow so much and we want to preserve history for others to see."

You can find out more by visiting Transylvania Shop and Coffee's Facebook or by visiting the shop at 462 Victoria Road, Govanhill.
