Transport ministry to launch disaster management road sign

The Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry will use a new road sign to restrict the entry of general vehicles to parking areas that serve as bases for recovery activities in the event of a disaster

The sign, which will be placed at the entrances of parking lots only when disasters occur, features an illustration of a disaster response vehicle on a blue background, and the words "Disaster Management" in Japanese and English.

Under the revised Road Law enacted in March, the transport ministry designates locations such as parking lots that can be used as disaster prevention bases by the Self-Defense Forces, police, firefighters in the event of a disaster, and general vehicles are restricted from entering these areas.

The bases are expected to be in such places as the about 500 roadside rest areas that have been designated as temporary evacuation sites for local residents, and expressway service stations.
