Transformation plan for East Midlands Designer Outlet as expansion approved

East Midlands Designer Outlet are set to undergo a transformation as three units are getting further space added to them and a change in the appearance from the outside. Plans submitted to Bolsover District Council's planning committee called for a mezzanine floor to be added to units 1, 2 and 39 at the shopping centre, with the extra space being used for storage.

As well as changes to the interior of the units, the most striking thing about the planning application was the new look exterior, transforming how the shopping centre looks. More room will also be created on the ground floor of the three units with that space being used to give the shops occupying them more room to trade from.

According to the documents, seen by NottinghamshireLive, the current white walls will be replaced with glass fronting on unit 1 and unit 39. Discussions between the owners of the park, Designer Retail Outlet Centres, say they have been in talks with Bolsover District Council since June 2021 about the possible redevelopment of the three units, DerbyshireLive has reported

Speaking about the changes, the company said: "The extensions are proposed in order to respond to specific commercial and operational requirements for new and relocated tenants. "As well as small extensions to the existing retail units in question, non-trading mezzanines are to be created to accommodate ancillary spaces. Upgrading of those facades affected by the extension works will be made, including changes to the external-facing materials. "A minor reconfiguration of existing service yard areas will be undertaken to facilitate the extensions."

The new designs will "refresh the architectural form of the two significant anchor stores within the centre and in the process begin a planned refresh of the centre as a whole" the company added. Units one and two are currently empty at the shopping centre, which first opened in 1998, following the closure of GAP, while unit 39 is home to the Nike store.
