Transfer news LIVE! Arsenal get major Watkins boost; Tottenham hijack Danso deal; Man Utd eye Bailey and Tel

Transfer news LIVE!

The January transfer window is set to close in just a few days’ time but the drama continues right up until the deadline. Arsenal are keen to sign a new striker but have seen a bid rejected for Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins, though there could still be hope when it comes to signing him. Manchester United are also expected to be busy. Patrick Dorgu from Leece is understood to be closing in on a move, while they reportedly retain an interest in Mathys Tel of Bayern Munich plus Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey.

There are claims that Ruben Amorim is also looking to bring Sporting Lisbon winger Geovany Quenda to Old Trafford, while Marcus Rashford looks set to join Aston Villa on loan until the summer. Tottenham are also making some late moves in the window. Said to have been snubbed by Tel and Fikayo Tomori, Spurs have now hijacked Wolves’ loan deal for Kevin Danso to agree a permanent switch.

Manchester City are eyeing Nico Gonzalez and West Ham seem poised to sign Daniel Cummings from Celtic, while Carney Chukwuemeka, Ben Chilwell and Aaron Anselmino are all set to leave Chelsea as Liverpool continue to be linked with Milos Kerkez. Aston Villa agree Marco Asensio loan deal

22:57 , George Flood

Aston Villa look to be major players in the final stages of this January transfer window.

Having already agreed a loan deal for Marcus Rashford, the club are also swooping for Marco Asensio having sold Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr, loaned Emi Buendia to Bayer Leverkusen and fended off Arsenal interest in Ollie Watkins.

According to David Ornstein, Villa have clinched a loan agreement with PSG for former Real Madrid winger Asensio that will see them pay 100 per cent of his wages for the rest of the season.

Could a centre-back be next amid links to Chelsea’s Axel Disasi, with Diego Carlos having joined Fenerbahce last week?

Chelsea team-mate Joao Felix is also still said to be on their radar.

Tottenham agree Kevin Danso deal after Wolves hijack

22:51 , George Flood

Tottenham look to have now sealed the signing of Kevin Danso tonight.

The Austrian defender had looked poised for a medical at Wolves on Sunday after a straight loan deal until the summer was agreed with French club Lens.

However, Spurs have sensationally swooped at the 11th hour this evening to steal Danso from under the noses of their Premier League rivals ahead of Monday night’s transfer deadline.

David Ornstein of The Athletic reports that it’s a permanent deal for Tottenham, who will be paying €25m (£20.8m) for the Austrian international.

Danso is said to have agreed a five-and-a-half year contract in north London and already completed a medical.

Man City in talks over Nico Gonzalez deal

22:10 , George Flood

Manchester City are in talks to sign Nico Gonzalez, reports claim.

It has already been a very busy window for the reigning Premier League champions, who have brought in the likes of Omar Marmoush, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis as well as clinching agreements for Juma Bah and Christian McFarlane.

But they aren’t done yet, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that City are also pushing to sign Porto midfielder Gonzalez before the deadline.

He says discussions are ongoing between the clubs, with City wanting to negotiate a lower fee than his €60m release clause.

West Ham set to sign Celtic striker Daniel Cummings

22:05 , George Flood

West Ham are reportedly set to seal the signing of Daniel Cummings.

The Hammers have been pushing to secure a deal for Celtic’s highly-rated teenage forward this week.

West Ham wanted to secure a pre-contract agreement with Cummings for the summer, though Football Insider now claim that deal could yet be brought forward before Monday night’s transfer deadline.

The Hammers are hot on the trail of other strikers, with other reports today that they could sign Arthur Cabral from Benfica.

Chelsea set to sanction triple exit before deadline

21:59

Multiple exits look to be looming at Chelsea.

While it remains to be seen if the Blues will bring anyone in before Monday night’s transfer deadline, a few could well be heading out at Stamford Bridge.

Reports earlier claimed that Ben Chilwell was closing in on a move to Crystal Palace, while Fabrizio Romano says that summer signing Aaron Anselmino has agreed another loan switch to Marseille after returning early from Boca Juniors this month.

He also says that Chelsea are in talks with Borussia Dortmund over Carney Chukwuemeka, but will only accept a straight loan with no option to buy amid other interest from Monaco and two unnamed Premier League clubs.

But Axel Disasi looks likely to be staying put unless Aston Villa sign him, with talkSPORT claiming that Tottenham’s move for Kevin Danso likely ends their interest in the Frenchman.

Man Utd consider Leon Bailey and Mathys Tel as Rashford replacements

21:40

Manchester United could sign Leon Bailey to replace Marcus Rashford.

Rashford looks to be on his way to Aston Villa after a loan deal was agreed that is apparently likely to include an option to buy in the summer and will see the club paying 75 per cent of his rumoured £300,000-a-week wages.

There could yet be further dealings yet between the two clubs before Monday night’s deadline, with The Athletic reporting that Jamaican international Bailey is now being considered as a potential new option by United.

It is a deal that would be completely separate to Rashford’s loan.

The report adds that United are also considering Mathys Tel, who snubbed a permanent £50m switch to Tottenham on Friday.

It was said that Tel - also linked with Arsenal and Chelsea in this window, among other clubs - told Spurs that he wanted to stay at Bayern Munich for now, though previous speculation claimed he favoured a switch to Old Trafford.

Tottenham hijack Wolves move for Kevin Danso

21:29 , George Flood

Tottenham have hijacked Wolves’ move for Kevin Danso, reports claim tonight.

The Lens centre-back had looked to be closing in on a move to Molineux on a straight loan until the summer, with a medical planned for Sunday.

However, it appears that Spurs have now swooped in at the 11th hour as they look for a new centre-back of their own after apparently being snubbed by AC Milan’s former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori, to follow their rejection by Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

Ben Jacobs reports that Wolves have even been told in the “last few moments” that Austrian international and former Southampton loanee Danso, 26, is on his way to Tottenham.

A sickener for Wolves and it puts a real dampener on other reports that Brazilian striker Matheus Cunha will sign his new contract until 2029 tonight after scoring in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa.

Arsenal target Ollie Watkins suffers injury before deadline

20:41 , George Flood

While we’re on the subject of Aston Villa, Arsenal will note that Ollie Watkins was taken off at half-time against Wolves this evening.

Unai Emery has confirmed that the England striker was feeling a pain in his muscle and will undergo tests on Sunday, though he does not believe it to be a serious issue.

Boyhood Arsenal fan Watkins was the subject of a shock £60m bid from the Gunners earlier this week and it remains to be seen if they will submit another in the next couple of days.

“I changed him because he was feeling pain in his muscle,” Emery said of Watkins at Molineux.

“Tomorrow we will test him. It's not something important but I changed him for this injury.”

Unai Emery quizzed on Marcus Rashford to Aston Villa links

20:37 , George Flood

Unai Emery is remaining tight-lipped for now on Aston Villa’s move for Marcus Rashford.

Asked if he had any comment on the reports following tonight’s 2-0 loss to rivals Wolves in the Premier League, the Spaniard said: “No. I will wait for tomorrow and Monday.

“We have to replace the players that left and the club is working.”

It sounds like Emery wants two or three more signings through the door at Villa Park before Monday night’s deadline.

Aston Villa to cover 75 per cent of Marcus Rashford wage

20:32 , George Flood

More now on the transfer story of the day - Marcus Rashford’s imminent move from Manchester United to Aston Villa.

The England forward looks set to spend the rest of the season on loan in the Midlands after being exiled and strongly criticised by Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford and publicly signalled his desire for a fresh challenge elsewhere.

According to The I, Villa will be paying 75 per cent of Rashford’s £300,000-a-week wages during the duration of his stay, making him the highest-paid player at the club.

It has been reported by various outlets today that the deal is expected to include the option for a permanent summer transfer.

Postecoglou sends message to Spurs transfer targets

Friday 31 January 2025 22:35 , Alex Young

Tottenham head coach Ange Postecoglou says any prospective signings who need the "hard sell" to join the club are "not right" for Spurs this month.

Bayern Munich's Mathys Tel is reported to have turned down Spurs after the clubs agreed a £50million fee for the 19-year-old forward, while they are also exploring available centre-backs ahead of Monday's deadline after Radu Dragusin suffered a knee injury against Elfsborg.

Johan Lange, Spurs' technical director, flew to Munich this week to discuss a move with Tel's camp but the Frenchman is thought to be considering other options.

Postecoglou has consistently said he only wants new signings who are enthusiastic about the club's potential and, asked about the challenge of convincing players to join given Spurs' league position, he said: "It depends what the players are looking for.

Postecoglou said: "It’s still a big club, it’s still a club that can challenge for honours and it’s whether the player sees the potential that we see right now, or certainly that I see. If it’s too much of a hard sell it’s probably not the right one for us."

Howe explains Almiron exit

Friday 31 January 2025 15:34 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe revealed why Miguel Almiron's move to Atlanta United was done.

“PSR-related, that’s why we needed to do it. People are negotiating behind the scenes and I think it’s a deal that suits the club and suits Miggy, it’s a good time for him to get a fresh challenge.

“A club he knows very well and has a great relationship with. I think he goes into very good hands the other way.

“As I’ve said many times this month, it’s a deal we needed to do.

“It leaves us a little bit short in respect of that position where Miggy played in attacking areas currently, while Harvey’s injured and Callum’s injured, we’re certainly stretched in that area. But it was a deal we needed to do.”

Arteta quizzed on Watkins move in Arsenal transfer update

Friday 31 January 2025 14:12 , George Flood

Mikel Arteta would not be drawn on Arsenal’s pursuit of Ollie Watkins during his pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s massive showdown with Manchester City in the Premier League.

“You know I am not going to talk about individuals,” Arteta told reporters at London Colney this afternoon.

“We are actively looking to try and find solutions in that position and we will see what the market brings.”

Asked what sort of player Arsenal were looking for in the market, he added: “We dont really look at the market in those terms.

“We look at what we have in the squad, what we're lacking and what can make us look much better.”

Could Arsenal’s transfer plans change based on the result against City at the Emirates?

“That would mean we have not planned and we are reacting to something, which is not good,” Arteta said.

Friday 31 January 2025 12:50 , George Flood

The Gunners, along with Manchester City’s sister club Girona and Aston Villa, were understood to be awaiting a decision on the Norwegian wonderkid’s future after each making a play for his signature last week.

With a choice expected by Sunday, David Ornstein reported earlier this morning that Nypan was now expected to stay at current club Rosenborg until the summer, when a definitive decision on his next move will be made.

According to The Mirror, Arsenal will be in pole position for that deal at the end of the season and are still confident of winning the race.

Man Utd make contact to hijack Tottenham's Tel move

Friday 31 January 2025 10:37

Manchester United now look to be actively hijacking Tottenham’s move for Mathys Tel.

Spurs appeared to have won a crowded race for the teenage French forward also linked with the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Aston Villa, among others, having reportedly agreed a £50m deal with Bayern Munich for a permanent transfer.

However, Manchester United were still said to be active in the battle for Tel and exploring a potential loan move after holding fresh talks with the agent of Tel, whom reports have stated would prefer a switch to Old Trafford.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany now claims that United have made contact with Bayern over Tel and feel that they too would prefer a loan move, hence the delay with Spurs, who are said to be pushing for a decision.

However, it is believed that United need to offload players first with uncertainty still surrounding the respective futures of Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford.

It had been said that a final decision would be reached by Sunday, though David Ornstein of The Athletic is now reporting that Nypan is expected to stay at current club Rosenborg until a definitive decision on his future is made in the summer.

Aston Villa interest in Joao Felix deal confirmed

Friday 31 January 2025 09:52

Plenty more twists and turns to come on the Aston Villa striker front too, which could yet impact the future of Arsenal target Ollie Watkins before Monday night’s transfer deadline.

Villa’s football chief Monchi has confirmed that the club are interested in both Chelsea’s Joao Felix and Marco Asensio at PSG, with Jhon Duran set to complete his big-money move to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia today.

“They are two similar players and Unai’s taste,” the Spaniard said, per Fabrizio Romano. “Neither of them is easy.

“One at the salary level, the other at the cost level. But yes, they are players who attract Unai [Emery].”

Tottenham and Man Utd sent new Mathys Tel transfer update

Friday 31 January 2025 09:36

It looks like Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany and sporting director Max Eberl have both been publicly addressing Mathys Tel’s future again this morning.

They insist he remains a Bayern player for now and as such could feature against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga tomorrow.

Asked about the reports of Tottenham agreeing a deal for Tel, Eberl replied, according to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany, with the following: “It’s also about generating transfer revenue.

“Mathys is an incredibly sought-after player. Whether it will be a loan or a sale, we will discuss it in the coming days and hours.

“Will we make any more moves? Regardless of the money, our squad is very well set up.”

Mateo Retegui a 'serious contender' to join Arsenal

Friday 31 January 2025 09:02 , George Flood

Could Mateo Retegui be a new name in the Arsenal striker frame along with Ollie Watkins?

A deal for Aston Villa’s England marksman is looking rather unlikely as things stand with Jhon Duran off to Saudi Arabia, though that could change as Arsenal weigh up a second bid and Unai Emery targets other forwards, potentially Joao Felix and Matheus Cunha.

According to AFTV, Italy international Retegui is a “very serious” contender to move to the Emirates Stadium ahead of Monday night’s transfer deadline, having starred for Atalanta in Serie A this season following a summer move form Genoa.

Celtic eye Malacia after Arsenal block early Tierney exit

Friday 31 January 2025 07:53 , George Flood

It looks like Kieran Tierney won’t be leaving Arsenal quite yet.

Celtic are believed to have agreed a pre-contract for their former star to return to Glasgow on a free transfer when his current Gunners deal expires in the summer.

There were hopes that the reigning Scottish champions might be able to bring that move forward to January by taking Tierney on loan for the remainder of the season, but The Telegraph report that Arsenal have now blocked that possibility.

It is said that Celtic could look at Tyrell Malacia as a potential loan option now instead as Manchester United close in on the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce.

Chelsea could sell Nkunku to help finance Garnacho deal

Friday 31 January 2025 07:47 , George Flood

So how will Chelsea afford that rumoured bid for Alejandro Garnacho?

Chelsea look to be having a slight issue with offloading some of their unwanted players this month, with exits not quite yet agreed for the likes of Cesare Casadei.

According to TEAMtalk, the Blues could help finance a blockbuster move for Garnacho by offloading Christopher Nkunku.

Manchester United have held an interest in the Frenchman in this window and were said to have made a loan approach following rumours over a swap deal, but it seems now that Bayern Munich could revive their interest when they agree the exit of compatriot Mathys Tel.

The report also states that Chelsea remain interested in Garnacho’s Old Trafford team-mate Kobbie Mainoo ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Along with Ollie Watkins, Mathys Tel remains the other big name in transfer dispatches as the deadline gets ever closer.

The teenage French forward has decided to leave Bayern Munich this month in search of more regular football and appears to have interest from multiple Premier League clubs, including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Aston Villa.

Arsenal handed new Ollie Watkins boost

Friday 31 January 2025 06:52 , George Flood

Arsenal look to have been handed a new boost in the race for Ollie Watkins.

The Gunners are pushing to sign a new striker in the final days of the January transfer window and saw an opening bid worth in the region of £60m rejected by Aston Villa on Wednesday.

But reports suggest that Arsenal are plotting a second approach for Watkins, who is a boyhood Arsenal fan and has previously spoken of his dream to play for the club.

Indeed, the Daily Mail now report that the former Brentford star is open to a late switch to the Emirates Stadium as Arsenal weigh up a new offer, but the chances of pulling off any deal are tough with Villa about to sell fellow striker Jhon Duran to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.

It’s a matter of when and not if, following an update from Brendan Rodgers.

"I think that, like I said, we prepared that for the summer. I don't want to speak too much on it with the greatest respect, because he's not a Celtic player here now with us.

"But if we were able to do it, of course, we would like to do that, but that's out of our control at this moment in time."

Tottenham can offer similar minutes, but Arsenal and Chelsea would be more of a rotation role.

“Signing a player is easy. There's so many agents you can imagine pushing players left, right and centre.

“But the right one for the right price that fits how you want to play: that's the difficult thing and I think as a club we have to be mindful of that.”

Thursday 30 January 2025 10:36 , Alex Young

West Ham have received a boost in their pursuit of Brighton forward Evan Ferguson after Victor Boniface’s proposed move to Al Nassr was called off, writes Dom Smith.

Bayer Leverkusen were leading the race to sign Ferguson but their need for a striker has been eased after Al Nassr struck a deal for Jhon Duran, meaning Boniface will stay at Leverkusen.

Aston Villa frontman Duran was in London for a medical on Thursday ahead of a £64.5million move to the Saudi Pro League side.

The development has significant implications for West Ham, whose primary target in their hunt for a striker remains 20-year-old Ferguson.

Brighton will allow Ferguson to leave in the final days of the January window, either on loan or permanently, if the offer is right.

Other active targets include the RB Leipzig striker Andre Silva and PSV Eindhoven forward Ricardo Pepi. West Ham presented a package worth £20.9m to sign Pepi on loan with an obligation to buy, but PSV rejected that offer on Wednesday night.
