Trans prisoner segregated in women's jail after threats over child sex abuse

A trans prisoner with a history of sex crimes against children has been moved into segregation in a women’s jail after word got out about her offences.

The Record can reveal that Harryetta Thompson, 33, was allowed to live among the female population of Scotland’s only all-female prison until threats were made against her this week.

Registered sex offender Thompson, who has full male physiology, was said to have been overheard on the telephone at Cornton Vale discussing a conviction relating to the grooming of young boys, aged 10 and 12, which happened in 2016.

A prison source said: “Thompson is a disturbed individual and very volatile but prisoners have accepted her up to this week.

“She was overheard on the phone, making clear that her history includes sex crime involving children – and that’s a game changer.

“But it’s ludicrous that this person, with full male parts, is being held in a women’s prison.”

The source added: “This whole situation needs some clear and immediate direction to be made that takes people like Thompson out of the female estate.”

It follows the placing of rapist trans prisoner Isla Bryson into the women’s jail and the U-turn on a decision to move trans offender Tiffany Scott to a women’s jail, revealed by the Daily Record.

Dr Kate Coleman, of the Keep Prisons Single Sex group, said: “This disgraceful state of affairs cannot be brushed aside, with women in prison forgotten and overlooked once again, when Nicola Sturgeon steps down, as convenient as that may be.”

The Scottish Prison Service is reviewing the status of all trans prisoners and says any with history of violence against women will not be relocated to female prisons.
