Two crashed trams have been cleared from a busy Melbourne intersection after hours of traffic headaches for commuters.
Emergency services were called to the incident at Victoria Parade and Nicholson Street in East Melbourne about 10am on Wednesday.
Trams on routes 86, 96 and 30 were diverted along La Trobe Street for almost four hours while all west and southbound traffic lanes were closed.
Victoria's Department of Transport confirmed the intersection was reopened about 2pm after the trams were cleared.
Trams and buses were back on their normal routes, while traffic delays have eased along Nicholson Street, Brunswick Street and Victoria Parade.
"The Department of Transport and Planning thanks motorists and passengers for their patience as crews worked to clear the incident," a spokesperson said in a statement.
Paramedics were called to the scene but did not treat or transport any patients, Ambulance Victoria confirmed.
Yarra Trams will investigate what caused the two trams to collide.
"Safety is our number one priority at all times and an investigation will be completed to determine the events leading up to the collision," a spokeswoman said.
"We apologise to our passengers for the delays caused by this incident."
