Trainline launches split ticket feature so rail passengers can save money on fares

Trainline has launched a money-saving feature to help rail passengers make huge savings by buying 'split tickets'.

The leading travel app has developed SplitSave - which gives their customers access to split tickets on eligible routes across the UK.

SplitSave means travellers could collectively save millions of pounds, according to the ticketing company.

When searching on the app, the system will find combinations of cheaper tickets so that customers can save money on almost two thirds of all rail routes.

While some might think you'd have to make out of the way journeys, the feature automatically splits trips into multiple legs without the need for changing trains unnecessarily.

Trainline said examples of potential savings included £80.10 between Manchester Piccadilly and London Euston and £79.85 between Edinburgh Waverley and London King's Cross.

Clare Gilmartin, chief executive of Trainline, said: "We've been working closely with our industry partners on this exciting new feature, as it represents another big step in our shared goal of getting more people to pick train travel over cars and flights."

Jacqueline Starr, chief operating officer at the Rail Delivery Group, said: "We support any effort to improve how people buy tickets within the current fares structure, but ultimately these are only sticking plaster solutions on a system in need of major surgery.

"Reforms proposed by train operators and backed by consumer groups would deliver a better range of fares for everyone, encouraging people to use the network and generating revenue for government to re-invest back in to improvements in services.

"Planned fares trials, supported by new government funding, are positive progress, and now is the time for ambitious action as part of the Williams review to accelerate wholesale reform of the system for passengers."
