The shock winner of the 2022 Kentucky Derby is being moved to another stable after Eric Reed sensationally “quit” as the trainer of Rich Strike.
Rich Strike sprang to national fame when he overcame improbable odds of 80-1 to capture America’s biggest horse race at Churchill Downs last year.
Only days ago it was reported that the story of his fairytale success with trainer Eric Reed was to be the subject of a documentary and movie produced by legendary former NFL quarterback Peyton Manning's company Omaha Productions.
News of that arrangement led to Rich Strike’s owner Rick Dawson posting on Facebook, “Please be advised that the use of Rich Strike, his name, image & likeness has not been approved by me, as owner.
“A trademark is also in place & protects from unauthorized use of many other items.
"As owner of Rich Strike I have not approved any person or entity, including Omaha Prod, other than one website for merchandise & the KY Derby Museum to sell Rich Strike inspired items, or story.
“Thanks to all for your support & be aware of any non-authorized party or parties attempting to profit from Rich Strike.”
Rich Strike got into the Kentucky Derby field only due to a late non-runner and got up in the last strides to claim a first success at Grade 1 level for then little known trainer Reed, jockey Sonny Leon and Dawson.
He has not won another race since and finished a well beaten fifth of six when running on the Kentucky Derby undercard on Saturday.
According to another post from Dawson on Thursday, his next start will be under the supervision of another trainer.
“I just received notice, via a text, that Eric Reed has quit as my trainer," he said. "I have to make plans to move all my horses including Rich Strike immediately.
He added: “It appears his agent/manager & Eric are subject to an agreement with Omaha Prod they signed many months ago that may incriminate them regarding possible violation to my Trademark & NIL of my rights as owner of Rich Strike.
“Life will go on. GO RICHIE!”
In a statement published by Horse Racing Nation, Reed said: “I regret to announce that I have made a decision to resign as the trainer of Rich Strike. My stint as his trainer has been the joy of a lifetime, and I will be forever grateful for the opportunity and the ride the horse has given me and to everyone associated with Reed Racing.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Dawson has made a demand of me that I simply can’t abide. I have not made his decision lightly, but I have concluded that it is in the best interest of Reed Racing and my family. I wish nothing but the best for Rich Strike and Mr. Dawson going forward.”
