An "outstanding" cleaner saved the life of a customer who tried to take their own life at a Merseyside train station.
Vinnie O’Brien, 55, from Liverpool, stepped in during the incident at Southport station. The train presentation operative, who is responsible for keeping Northern trains clean, kept calm and administered first aid until paramedics arrived on the scene.
And now Vinnie has been shortlisted for a prestigious accolade at this year's National Rail Awards. The scheme recognises outstanding achievements across Great Britain and rewards individuals and initiatives which demonstrate innovation, measurable improvements and exceptional leadership, with Vinnie being nominated in the Outstanding Personal Contribution category.

Jack Commandeur, engineering director at Northern, said: “Vinnie is a credit to Northern and a life-saver in every sense of the word. His ability to remain calm under pressure and deal with the situation until paramedics arrived undoubtedly saved this customer’s life.”
Vinnie will discover if he is the winner in his category at the awards ceremony in London on Thursday, September 15.
